In collaboration with Artyom Kopp’s lab in the Evolution and Ecology department at UC Davis we have been working on characterizing the microbes that live in and on Drosophila. Key personnel on this project have been Angus Chandler in Artyom’s lab and Jenna Morgan and Srijak Bhatnagar in the Eisen lab.
Two papers have been published from this collaboration:
- PLoS Genetics: Bacterial Communities of Diverse Drosophila Species: Ecological Context of a Host-Microbe Model System.
- AEM: Yeast Communities of Diverse Drosophila Species: Comparison of Two Symbiont Groups in the Same Hosts
In addition, we have done some work on Wolbachia associated with Drosophila.
- PLoS Biology: Phylogenomics of the reproductive parasite Wolbachia pipientis wMel: a streamlined genome overrun by mobile genetic elements.
The Eisen lab work on this project is currently unfunded.
