I am an evolutionary biologist and a Professor at U. C. Davis. (see my lab site here). My research focuses on the origin of novelty (how new processes and functions originate). To study this I focus on sequencing and analyzing genomes of organisms, especially microbes and using phylogenomic analysis

  1. But isn't this a 'boil the ocean' sized problem? It strikes me that the cost to make even a modest impact – to redistribute the way people and places are arranged across the entire planet – is so insurmountably huge as to prevent any actual action. To that, the long-term nature of the threat makes it almost impossible to get anyone excited about it.

What to do? what to do?

  2. not that hard to make an impact – sure sprawl is everywhere – but it was really nice living in one of these types of communities as I did in MD – build a few more here and there and i am pretty sure others will like them too

this does not get rid of sprawl but could slow it down
