Is this a new form of #OpenAccess Spam – spammy blog comments pointing to Bentham

Well, this is very very weird and not sure what to make of it.  In the last week the filter that Google runs for Blogger Comments has picked up a slew of highly spammy comments coming from one account.  And all of the comments include a link to Bentham Science publishers – one of the annoying Spammy new publishers. See some of them below (note I have removed the links to Bentham but trust me, this went to a Bentham site).  Anyone else getting Spam comments pointing to Bentham?

Dear UCLA IMED Seminar SPAM – I will NOT maintain your emails in a safe, secure and confidential manner

I have gotten a few email announcements – that I did not sign up for – from a seminar series from UCLA called IMED.  The emails come with a warning at the end:

IMPORTANT WARNING: This email (and any attachments) is only intended for the use of the person or entity to which it is addressed, and may contain information that is privileged and confidential. You, the recipient, are obligated to maintain it in a safe, secure and confidential manner. Unauthorized redisclosure or failure to maintain confidentiality may subject you to federal and state penalties. If you are not the intended recipient, please immediately notify us by return email, and delete this message from your computer.

No – I will not keep your emails in a safe, secure and confidential manner.  No way to unsubscribe from the emails.  I did not sign up for them.  This is SPAM.  And even if it was not SPAM I would certainly not follow such a warning.  Am wondering – do these warning EVER hold any legal authority?

It may have been a flawed #OpenAccess "Sting" but WE ROCKED IT so submit to our journal …

I suppose I knew this was coming … but did not expect it so soon … see the email I received below.  Focus in particular on the part highlighted in yellow ….

Dear Colleague,

British Biotechnology Journal (BBJ) is an OPEN peer-reviewed, OPEN access, INTERNATIONAL journal, inspired from the great OPEN Access Movement. We offer both Online publication as well as Reprints (Hard copy) options. Article Processing Charge is only 50 US$ as per present offer. This journal is at present publishing Volume 4 (i.e. Fourth year of operation).

2. Transparent and High standard Peer review:
In order to maintain highest level of transparency and high standard of review, this journal presently follows highly respected and toughest Advanced OPEN peer-review system(Example Link1, Link2, Link3, Link4, Link5, Link6, Link7, Link8, Link9, Link10,Link11, etc). We hope that you will appreciate this Advanced OPEN peer-review system, which is expected to give doubtless scholarly benefit and impact to the authors in long run. Additionally we strongly encourage and promote “Post-publication Peer review” by ourcomment section.

As per a recent report (Link) of Science journal (present Impact factor 31), one of our journal passed a stringent test of quality of Peer review by rejecting a fake article (Link1,Link2, Link3). We applaud the dedication and hard-work of our peer reviewers and editors to maintain the high standard of our journals. It was reported that only few journals (20), out of total 304 journals tested, rejected the fake article after substantial peer review. We are happy that our journal was among these few successful journals along with industry leaders like PLoS One, Hindawi, etc. We believe that the result of this experiment also proved the efficacy of our Advanced OPEN peer review and ‘post publication’ peer review system. Though the report is debated, as it did not include subscription journals, we normally support any effort to improve the quality and transparency of peer review.

3. Proposed Time Schedule:
Submission to first editorial decision with review comments: 3 weeks
Submission to publication: 6 weeks
State-of-the-art ‘running issue’ concept gives authors the benefit of ‘Zero Waiting Time’ for the officially accepted manuscripts to be published.

Spammy journal Editorial Board invitation of the week – Avens Journal of Food Processing and Beverages

I get lots of semi-Spammy email invites to be involved in various new journals.  Here is one from this week.  I figure – the more I post such things, when people Google for the journal they will sometimes see my posts about how idiotic some of these journals are.  No idea how I ended up on their radar here ..

Dear Dr. Jonathan Eisen,

Good morning to my Twitter SPAM followers – is Twitter even trying to stop this?

Here are some of my SPAM followers from this morning … again … all pointing to blog.livedoor.jp addresses.  Twitter still does not seem willing or able to do anything about this.  Annoying.

I and others have written about this extensively and still no response or action from Twitter.

Twitter seems to have lost complete control of some spam

Aaarrrrggg … this is driving me crazy.  For over a month now I have been seeing 10-20-30 or more new followers a day on Twitter that are some sort of SPAM.

For example, a few minutes ago I looked at my most recent followers:

And when I look at them in more detail I see many of them are simply posting links to some SPAMMY sites at the domain “blog.livedoor.jp”.  For example

and many many many many more.  They are all like this with links to some spammy site at blog.livedoor.jp.  It is so easy to identify these … but it is a pain.  Why can’t Twitter get a handle on this?   I mark them as SPAM – day after day after day.  And more come. Uggh.

Sign of the apocalypse? Science conference SPAM hybridizes w/ Nigerian advanced fee SPAM.

Normally I do not share SPAM emails.  But I have posted occasionally about Journal SPAM and Conference SPAM.  So what do I do here.  I just received an email that appears to be a hybrid between Conference SPAM and Nigerian advanced fee SPAM.  OMG.  The merging of two SPAM systems.  Too bad the Conference is not about viagra – though since it is about Metagenomics perhaps it somehow got flagged due to studies of the penis or vagina microbiome?   In this case I just had to post …

Dear Honored Sir or Madam,

I am Prof. Mohammed Kaoje Abubakar minister of Science for the Republic of Nigeria under former President Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. In this role I became in control of large sums of money dedicated to scientific research and the exchange of ideas with researchers from across the globe. However, since the time of the unfortunate death of President Yar’Adua, I have been under intense scrutiny of the new director of the ministry and have been unable to complete my mission. Fortunately,  I remain in charge of most of the 200 million dollars US, but the current government will only release the funds in conjunction with scientific activities involving prominent foreign national scientists like yourself.

Therefore, on behalf of the 3rd Nigerian Congress of Metagenomics I am pleased to welcome you to propose a speech on your recent discovery about the genomic basis for the origin and evolution of new functions at the congress by submitting your speech title and CV to us. Meanwhile, we hope you can share your stimulating data, valuable scientific information and influential experiences with other industrial leaders, professionals and research pioneers. You are encouraged to network and explore partnering opportunities.

As a branded Conference of Nigeria Congresses LLC, “Your Think Tank”, NCM continues to expand with magnificent scientific and social programs to maximize your network in a free communication meeting environment.

l  Keynote Forum – Presentations from Nobel Prize Laureate and Senior Leaders of Renowned Company
l  Parallel Forum – 200+ Sessions and Symposiums provide 1000+ speech opportunities for experts from all of the world
l  Welcome Banquet – All the participants enjoy the formal buffet dinner with wonderful performance show
l  Project Matching Activity – Develop effective platform by free booths supply
l  Keymakers Summit – Special Forum for Enterprisers to discuss hot issues face to face
l  Exhibition and Poster Zone

3rd Nigerian Congress of Metagenomics  is initiated for filling the gap between Eastern and West World for metagenomic professionals of free information exchange. In the past decade, NCM has attracted more than 5,000 enthusiastic speakers to communicate on the R & D advances in different therapeutic fields, which have generated great impact on the Chinese Bio/pharmaceutical development, enhanced Research and Development outsourcing, helped regional liaison of big pharma seeking partnership and searching talents, created a lot of opportunities for face-to-face network for multilateral collaboration by sharing both scientific and technological breakthroughs and speed up the process of many challenging drug discovery projects.
